They are more efficient at producing light than standard incandescent lights and last much longer. LED lights can last up to 100,000 hours or more, which is four times longer than high quality standard lights, and twice as long as fluorescent lights.
Depending on the purpose of the exterior LEDs, there are number of different types available. The best exterior LED lighting schemes do not interfere with the overall look and feel of the landscape. LEDs can be selected in a wide range of colors, but softer LEDs typically look better in a landscape unless there is a particular color theme that needs to be displayed. A wide range of fixtures are available that can fit into almost any landscape scheme. Fixtures include stainless steel, aluminum, wrought iron, brass, and many other types.
Exterior LED lights are safer to use than standard lights as well because they are composed in plastic containers usually instead of glass. The other major benefit of using exterior LED lights is that they will last longer and not require as much maintenance, allowing designers to spend more time on other elements of a landscape. Exterior LED lights should be carefully selected to complement a landscape. LED lights usually provide more light for their size than standard lights, and the lighting layout will need to take that into consideration.
Some exterior LED lights may be slightly more in cost than standard lights, but are well worth the upgrade as they can outperform standard lights in longevity and look better in some cases. Exterior LED lights can be switch powered in a basic setup or timed to turn on at night. For switch powered systems the owner has more control over when they turn on, but timed systems save the owner more management time. Light detection systems turn on and off based on a light sensor, so they gradually brighten as during sunset and gradually dim during dawn.
